March Madness and Covid-19

Japanese are more traditional than we are. No one said they don't have cities, but of course you digress. We are more sociable than they are and it's called a comparison. It is not one in the same. No one said they do not socialize. Either they socialize more than us, less than us or the very same. Hello!

NYC has close to twice the population density of Tokyo.

How could you possibly measure how they socialize? Any quick research into Japan and regardless of whether or not they throw karaoke parties like we do, they are packed together like sardines. Almost the entire population relies on public transport in some form, and the greater Tokyo area has 37 million people. And they have a really old population.

Everything about Japan makes you think it should be hard hit zone.... Except one thing, they don't have idiots there who refuse to comply with anything out of some misplaced notion of government oppression.

I'll take the word from someone who worked at our embassy in Tokyo (not Shirley Temple).

The Texas positivity rate rolling average hit a record high of 16.89% in the previous 24 hours. Yesterday was their largest one day increase in cases, 10,859 and their third highest increase in deaths, 104. Governor Abbott is denying it, but I would guess that another shutdown will happen soon.

As happy as that might make you.....you would guess wrong. Virtually every business that is open here requires masks, so mask-wearing in public is not an issue....at least where I'm located. Everything from supermarkets to gyms to restaurants all require them (and have for several weeks). We will see if that will help to put a dent in the rolling increase over the next two weeks.

Inner city Houston and Dallas have had rising case problems which there are multiple reasons IMO.....and to a lesser degree the counties of Tarrant (Ft. Worth), Travis (Austin), and Bexar (San Antonio) have been up and down.

The biggest outlier problem currently is in the Rio Grande Valley. I think Hidalgo county (which isn't a real populous county) had around 30 deaths reported in a day....yikes! Abbott is sending in help for them:

Maybe in another post, I can go into reasons that Houston and Dallas will likely continue to rise....at least for the next week or so.

It would make me happy because it would save lives. Obviously the measures taken so far aren’t working.

ICUs will

I think they have plans in place for adding icu beds. Don’t quote me on that though

The good news so far is that we have had two weeks of increased cases and the deaths haven’t gone up much. Hopefully that continues

deaths lag by 10-14 days. with this spike it's gonna go up appreciably. we are getting better at treatment though. I talked to some nurses (my sister, cousin, aunt, and 2 friends) and it was interesting listening to the progression of treatments that have happened so far. that was part of the original strategy fauci spoke of months back. stretch this out long enough and we get the death rate down by osmosis alone. it was also interesting comparing the various strategies. That group above included nurses from Idaho, Wisconsin, OKC, Cali, and Tx.

It hasn’t gone up appreciably when we spiked from 100 to 500 cases per day over two weeks ago. Why do you think it will going from 500 to 1000?
