March Madness and Covid-19

What you have proposed is very reasonable, but if you will notice, when we spend trillions in Iraq and Afghanistan, offsets like these are never asked for. We "find" the money and nobody sacrifices except the people fighting the wars.

Which is unfortunate because a lot of that is a total waste of money in the first place. We shouldn't even have bases in Europe, or be enforcing marijuana prohibition, or spending so much on lofty fighter jet projects.

I loved the piece by Elon Musk saying the era of the fighter jet is basically over, but we are spending trillions on them.

Total change of subject, but modern ballistic missiles, drones, and cruise missiles have pinpoint accuracy and can be delivered without a fighter jet. Plus, when you have 7,000 nukes, defense of the homeland becomes a lot simpler.

A lot of these weapons systems are manufactured in the districts of congresspeople who depend on bringing in the bucks to keep getting re-elected.

Oddly enough, the only threat to the homeland these days is, wait for it, a global pandemic

I think he means that you should never close a base or cancel an order for a weapons system during a war.

I will wait for him to answer that, but if that is his claim, I would argue the following:

  • The Constitution grants Congress the power to declare war. That has not happened since 1942.
  • This is a special/unique situation, and the money is needed for this domestically
  • The F-35 will go down as one of the biggest wastes of public money in history
  • We could accomplish all operational objectives in the Middle East with F-18's, F-16's, and F-15's... We don't need new weapons systems for our current conflicts.
  • Technically, we can accomplish all those bombing objectives with cruise missiles and drones

Chances are reducing sand bags and sand during flooding situations will not likely be seen as prudent. The majority likely sees it as such. It is not a "me" thing nor a political one.

When you have a brake job you could request that the wheel bearings not be replaced, but that call should be done by those who are experienced. Not all of us are experienced. I know this applies to myself.

In any event, the amount of capital to fight our national health crisis is not contingent on the monies consumed by the "war machine."

Wow, looks like all air major air traffic on the East coast is being shut down as JFK, LGA, and EWR (Newark) airports all shut down outgoing flights. LGA and Philly already halted all inbound flights. This is due to Covid-19 depleting the staff levels in the towers.

They keep saying we are "at war" so why shouldn't it?

Unless the flooded areas don't need any more sand bags, and the government is charging the taxpayers $5,000 per sand bag.

We are taking unprecedented measures. Again, there is no positive correlation between the steps taken to fight the mitigation of this virus versus and the costs of the military, in fact those in the military are redirecting their time and efforts to help in the fight.

And sand bags do not have an infinite life so at some time they need to be replaced. Having an edge against an opponent is practical. If you were competing in a charity golf tournament would you use clubs with wooden shafts?

New Orleans is getting absolutely hammered after allowing Mardi Gras to go on as planned. I did see them finally get concerned and clear out Bourbon Street the other day.
