I wish we where actually The Program so many of US think we are. I get caught up into as well because I am a FANATIC of OU Sports! But guys this is not the same PrOUd Program it once was! Just the facts, sorry to be Debbie Downer! Could it be again, of course but the Fan Base is not good, the facilities are not great, the current talent on campus is not very good, and then NCAA has been sharing the house lately. Sampson and Capel seem to be on their favorites on the ol' contact icon.

Hire Evans already and get over it people. We are not going to attract even the best of a Mid Major Program right now. Negative recruiting is going on against OU right now because of all the references stated above, what is Evans going to hurt being a DII Coach. Heck at least he is wants to be here and has the kind of connections this Program needs RIGHT NOW - JUCOS!
He is a winner..............

I know I have posted this on other threads, but I wanted to put it out there again. Flame away, delete it, pIsS on it, I do not care. Much love to all my Sooner Brothers and Sisters!

Things will get better and have a nice weekend!

You bet. Glad you went back and edited that, because you would have sounded dumb if you would have left it as it was.

I was going to start a thread about this but I guess I'll just post it here. The highlighted above is why I think they have to hire Evans. We're not even going to get a top mid-major coach and in the end we'll end up over paying that guy.

It seems to me that we may be backed into a corner where we have to take a risk on Evans. If it works out then great. If not in four years we start all over again without the NCAA looming over our heads.

Now if Joe has something up and pulls off the miracle all this is gibberish.

If it is so bad, right now, why are we in such a hurry to ruin Terry Evans career?

I do not think this would ruin Evans career, I think it would make his career and he would end up as the winnest coach in OU History. He has all the tools to be very successful. Sorry if that is the impression I left, no way do I feel that way!

Your overly broad statement of the facilities not being great is also incorrect. I would agree that our playing facility is not up to standards, but for all other accounts are facilities are outstanding.

This is all just overreaction by fans. We are frustrated by the lack of information. We also have to understand the reality of not getting a "name/splash" coach.

Bottom line is, being a football school actually hurts the perception of our program because people just do not care when we are terrible like we are right now, and true top 25 programs do not get a half-empty arena for every game except Texas, IMO.

Flame away...

Don't get me wrong. There is a small chance that Evans will be wildly successful. The overwhelming odds against him based on the current situation and his own inexperience, though, point to failure. I am not saying that I want him to fail, but I don't believe that now is the right time for Evans or the right time for our program. I would hate to see him take the OU gig and languish for a few years, as OU reals off more 14 win seasons. Especially, when I believe that a more experienced Evans with a better situation at OU can be a great coach.

This is fun and thanks soonermcd93, you are correct, I did mean the only the arena and not the complete facilities.

I could be wrong, because Joe C can try to be a "Bobby Bethard" at times, but we need a steady force that has an established philosophy more than ever. That would lend itself to credibility and stabalize recruiting. I, for one, was intrigued by Pastner (real or not) because he was a wildcard that could ignite recruiting. Without that, I say we need the former.

We are not going to be able to hire the splash type coach that many had hoped for. It is what it is. Jim Tressel was succesful at OSU and Bobby Stoops at OU and both made significant jumps in the level they were coaching at previously, won the MNC within two years of arriving at their destination schools, and took over a much more complex operation with more moving parts - a football program. And noone would have predcited that they would be uber successful.

We need to hire the best coach with great organizational skills, the ability to recruit, and expertly coach the X's and O's. Terry Evans has been quite succesful at each stop. Hiring a coach with a proven track record in Division 1 does not seem to be in the cards. The Illinois coach - give me a physical break (retread). I also want no part of Steve Robinson either. Terry Evans, Terry Stotts, Billy Tubbs with Terry Evans as his #1 assistant/coach in waiting, and Tubby Smith would be guys I'd like to see.

I don't think that our less than desirable situation is as dire going forward as many do. Hiring the "right" coach is a matter of personal preference. Our new coach will not be in the 4 - 5 star rank. Who cares? Well plenty do but only because they are chasing reputation and proven track records at D1 schools. Everyone else is gonna be a projection.

I would love for your comparisons to be valid, but they aren't. Stoops was a d-coordinator at two successful football programs. College football has a long track record of coordinators becoming successful head coaches. The jump from DC at a football power like UF to HC at a football power like OU is not that big of a jump.

Tressel is a slightly better comparison, but only because he cam from another division (I-AA) in this case. Two quick points: the jump from I-AA to I-A is less steep than the jump from D-II to D-I in basketball and Tressel won 4 national titles and played for 2 more, Evans has been to one elite eight.

None of this is meant to bash Evans, but I think we all should take off our crimson colored shades and look at Evans honestly. Is this good for our program, right now? Is this good for Evans, right now? Would both be better off waiting for a future date?

There are two things a person must have to be successful - aptitude and attitude. Succinctly put, aptitude is "can you do", and attitude is "will you do". I have no doubt that Terry Evans has the attitude, and judging from his record at previous stops at the high school and DII level, he has the aptitude. I understand that there are different challenges at a major D1 school, but I think he's shown he has some of the qualities to get it done. I'd like to hear from you all what areas of being the coach at OU, if selected, in which he may struggle and if you think he has the metal to improve.

Excellent post sir. Hiring the "right" coach is indeed a matter of personal preference. Back in the day, I'm certain that few on here would have picked Billy Tubbs as the "right" coach.

Let's relax and see what happens.
