OU Coaches - Conference Record 1st Five Seasons

and KU was sleepwalking the last 20 minutes while keeping their 13-20 point lead all game. In fact, they had that lead from the 12 minute mark of the first half and just kinda had it on cruise control the rest of the way.

i guess they had it in cruise control from the start then b/c we scored 33 in the first half. 37 in the second. such a huge difference:ez-laugh:

Seriously? It doesn't matter if you score 100 points if you give up 115. The object of the game is to score more points than the other team not to score as many points as possible.

i didn't mean the comment as a moral victory. it was simply in response to how bad our offense is. that is all. And yes, our offense has been up and down but what do you expect when every player except for TWO are playing their first season at OU and are playing sig minutes.

This is crazy logic from I don't know were. Of course it's all coaching. if Kelvin's team average 70, Ill bet the defense average is below that.

Regular Season Conference Record

Dave Bliss (1976, 77, 78, 79, 80) .... 38-32 (.543)

Billy Tubbs (1981, 82, 83, 84, 85) .... 48-22 (.685)

Kelvin Sampson (1995, 96, 97, 98, 99) .... 48-28 (.632)

Jeff Capel (2007, 08, 09, 10, 11) .... 36-42 (.462) ... 2 games remaining

********************

11 - It took Billy Tubbs 11 seasons to lose 42 conference games
9 - It took Kelvin Sampson 9 seasons to lose 42 conference games
5 - It took Jeff Capel 5 seasons to lose 42 conference games.

********************

Note: The Big-8 had 14 regular season games. The Big-12 started play in 1997, and has 16 regular season games.

Wow if Joe C isn't looking at this he should. Capel has almost destroyed our program.

What would you blame it on? Recruiting? Guess what, that's part of coaching.

Or, would you rather blame it on the fans?

To say the coach is not ultimately responsible for turning a top 20 program into a top 200 program is ludicrous and ill Informed.

Good post. Some people just don't want to blame the coach. But it all starts and finishes with him. Common Joe gives us someone that knows what they are doing.

This is the problem with posters on this board, and REALLY Denver is not one that does this often. But, in this case, he TOTALLY took bounce's post out of context. I can only assume posters jump to judgement on these types of things because the losing makes them ONLY see the black and white of an issue.

As bounce said, his response (if you'd taken the time to read what he replied to) was in reference to someone saying our offense sux (more or less).

this Kelvin guy that you all are waxing on so poetically about is the same guy many on the Boards wanted run out of town right?

Mike Krzyzewski took over a Duke team that had been the NCAA Finals, 2nd round and Elight Eight in the three years prior to his arrival. He then went 28-42 (.400) in conference play in his first five years at Duke.

I do not mean to suggest that Capel is the next coming of Coach K, in any way, shape or form. I am merely pointing out that sometimes records are not as conclusive as some like to think.

It is actually 4 (but only 3 play) and it is 100% Jeff Capel's fault that OU only returned 4 players.

Taylor was the 3rd option in the post as a freshman if I remember right.

I've seen a lot of people try to credit Capel for what Taylor did as a senior, mostly in the 2nd half of that season.

What those people tend to forget, is that Taylor played 12 minutes a game as a true frosh, shot the ball over 50% from the field, and shot it at 80% from the FT line. He also rebounded at nearly the same clip (per minute played) his entire 4 years. Very slight change there.

And I cannot find a box score, but he had a big game, AT Stillwater his frosh year too. He was a big reason we won that game.

That is why I've never understood why he was so down on Sampson. He got decent minutes as a true frosh backing up a couple of seniors, and was in line to get even more the following seasons. Taylor should have loved a coach like Kelvin that wanted tough, physical play.

Reportedly, Taylor was told by Kelvin not to shoot.

Well, we all know Kelvin liked the majority of his shots to come from his better shooters. Makes sense to me, especially considering Taylor was a true frosh that wasn't known to be particularly good offensively, away from the rim.

Not to mention his shots per minutes played didn't change much over his four years.

Oh well.

I guess you'd have to ask TG...

Was he told not to shoot? Or was he told not to shoot 3's?
Taylor thought he was a guard and liked the perimeter.
Kelvin knew better and it wouldn't surprise me if he told Taylor not to shoot 3s.

Coach K won 24 games his 4th year, 23 his 5th after. Back to back years before of winning 10 and 11 games. And in his first 5 seasons he was in the post season 3 of the 5 seasons.

Coach Capel has been in the post season two seasons. And his last 2 of the 5 years have been the worst 2 years. Big differences between the 2.
