The most fascinating thing about the women's game to me is their ability to hit while running.
In men's softball (fast pitch), the top pitchers throw somewhere just over 80 mph, possibly as high as 85. But, even if they are "slow," they are usually throwing around 70 mph. If you factor in the difference in distance between the rubber and home plate in softball (43 feet) vs baseball (60.5 feet), a baseball pitch is 1.407 times as far. Thus, a 70 mph softball pitch would get to home plate as rapidly as a 98.5 mph in fastball. In men's softball, it seems that two-thirds of the outs are strikeouts. It is difficult for the average guy to react to a 98 mph fastball. But, this is about the speed of the top women's softball pitchers.
Maybe the top speed pitchers like Monica Abbott throw at about 76 mph. OK. That doesn't seem like it's all that fast. But, that is about 107 mph in fastball. Nobody to my knowledge has ever thrown 107 mph. Most pro hitters have difficulty keeping up with a pitcher who throws 100 mph. You are considered pretty fast if you throw over 96. A lot of pro baseball hitters can't hit that.
But, here are college softball players doing something that I never would have thought of trying. They are running out of the batter's box as they swing at a 70 mph pitch (remember that this is the equivalent of a 98.5 mph fastball in major league baseball in how fast it gets to home plate. Instead of striking out while concentrating on just meeting the ball, they are in the act of running as they lay the bat on the ball. I'm too old to try this to see how it works (it's also to swing with a prosthetic leg), but I am fascinated that they can hit the ball.
In some cases, it's almost like bunting, which would make it easier. But, some of them are taking full swings through the ball as they stride out of the box. I am impressed. In men's softball, when good pitchers met each other, it seemed like a couple of hits or errors would win a game because nobody was really hitting the ball that well. The box score would show fourteen strikeouts in seven innings. We would never have tried to hit it on the run.
