Starting lineup begins to emerge

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Derek Peterson is already a better sports reporter than most of the paid hacks in this state. I really like his writing style.

There were no real surprises in this latest addition of his practice report. I think Woodard, James and Lattin are practically locks to start the season. The other two spots are not nearly as certain. But if Odomes has progressed as expected, I can see him in one of those spots. Rashard was a prolific scorer in high school. He was also said to be one of our best on the ball defenders in practice last year, reportedly giving Buddy fits with his aggressive style.

To me, the fifth spot is still up for grabs. One would think LK will go with more size, Freeman for example, or at least a banger inside like Buford or Doolittle. It's definitely going to be interesting. I can't wait for the season to start!

Thanks for posting, OUHoops!

Peterson said on his Twitter account today that he thought the 5th starter would be Buford. At least to start the year. He loves Odomes and said James may be the best rebounding guard in the league. Those 2 are the wings. Woodard and Lattin are givens. Peterson didn't go to practice today, but I've starting reading his Twitter account because he usually includes 3-4 video clips along commenting on who is playing well that day.

If I was forced to name 2 players who might push for a starting position by the end of the season, they would be Doolittle and McGusty.

I've been scouring his twitter too as he has tons of great info. I'm surprised you didn't mention Freeman. He's been running with the starters this week at the 4. So, there are literally tons of combinations that could be worked. I agree with a previous poster that said the days of one lineup are gone and we might see many different combos this year, at least in non con, until people establish themselves.

Glad Odomes used last year as a positive. Watched him once in high school and thought he could play in the nba

Based on last year I would be suprised to see Woodard, James and Lattin not starting.

Odomes was making great penetrating moves last year and drawing fouls early on. But he didn't finish well and the other teams just quit fouling him. He also did not show an outside shot. His defense and rebounding were OK. If he can show an outside shot now and then and finish or dump off on his drives I believe that he can be a lock to start. Otherwise at best he will be in the game on his athlethism and be a fifth option on offense like Lattin was last year.

McNease was coming along to the point where he was trusted with critical minutes at the end of the year. He also showed some good touch around the rim with hook shots.

Buford hit well from the outside but appeared to have trouble guarding wings. With Lattin's dominance inside Buford could get away with playing the 4 where his defense would play pretty well.

I don't have a clue about Doolittle, Freeman, McGusty, Strong or Shepherd. I suspect some will be in the main rotation and there may even be a starter in there or even two by the end of the season. I expect Kruger to give most of this group a fair number of minutes in the first half of the season hoping they will be able to contribute in key moments late in the season.

The real sleeper may be Shepherd. If Kruger sees him as the point guard of the future he will give him serious minutes. If not he will probably not see the court much.
