Will be interesting how the Big 12 handles this

League "publicly reprimands" the WV player. Also reprimands Texas Tech and issues $25,000 fine. No suspensions.

I dislike Marcus Smart as much as anyone, but he got a full 3 games for his shove of a Tech fan back in 2014. If that's the standard, the WVU kid taking a full swing at a fan, regardless of the circumstances, certainly merits something more than just a public reprimand.

Some might say Smart's push was during the game or he entered the stands (not sure if he did it was on the baseline). However I would argue once the horn sounds you should tone it way down and it might be worse. I did not see the actual video.

Be sure all the league players know they can lay out any fans storming the court. That is what this ruling is saying, absurd.

I think part of the issue is that the "actual video" is of poor quality so it's hard to see exactly what went down.

I do think you're right that the fact that Smart's happened during play was a factor, but I still think this warranted a suspension, even if it was lighter than Smart's 3 games.

Not surprised they hit Tech and they should have. Am surprised they didn’t do anything other than “reprimand” the WV guy. On the other hand it is not quite the same thing as the Smart situation since that really took place off the court of play. So I guess I expected at least a 1 game suspension but probably less than 3.

Jay Bilas just weighed in. He wasn’t even in favor of the reprimand of the WVU player. He basically said the league needs to protect the players, and there is no reason for the fans to be on the court...hence he was ok with the punch. It definitely sends a message to the fans to not rush the court. While I can see both sides of this, assuming the fan didn’t instigate the altercation, the player deserved a one-game suspension. If the fan instigated it, I would not be in favor of a suspension.

I thought I heard him say that...sorry Bilas..wrong, unless the fan is attacking actually hitting another person (fan) should have consequences.

The player has to be punished, imo.

Players need to be protected from fans but players are responsible for their own actions.

Nah, I agree with him. Rushing the court is maybe the worst thing about college sports! Be better! Give the opposing team time to get off the court or field. TTU should have had a fine 10x bigger than they got. I agree with Bilas 1000%. If Trae Young had hit a fan, in the exact same circumstances, people here would be blaming the fans.

lol

Rushing the court is one of the great things about college athletics.

Its part of the game and part of the experience.

The fan did nothing to deserve being punched.

I cannot believe the player was not suspended. He's a sore loser that can't control his anger.

Saying you can commit a crime (assault and battery) against a person because they committed a misdemeanor seems like really bad logic to me.

If a fan pushes, threatens or punches a player, I think they should defend themselves but if a fan storms the court and happens to innocently bump a player, the player shouldn't use that as excuse to punch someone because they are angry about a loss. Would the player really punch someone in another crowd situation? I doubt it.

No, we wouldn't. Not if it happened the way it did on Saturday, with a fan just barely and inadvertently bumping Trae as he and other fans rushed the court.

Look, if the Big 12 or even the NCAA wants to end court storming, fine. I don't much care one way or the other, as long as the fans behave themselves. But it's been going on forever and let's not pretend it's some huge moral failing on the part of a host university and its fans.

Very good point. Storming the court is part of college basketball. Maybe it is outdated and needs to go but it is a well established tradition in college basketball. Personally, I like it. I like the passion of the college fans.

Besides what happened at Tech (not the first time something like that has happened) there have been multiple incidents of media, fans, and school personnel injuries. The league and schools would just be asking for unnecessary law suits. Court storming was never a good idea and it was a bad idea to ever treat it that way.

I still think the WV guy should have received at least one game on the bench but it is silly to invite this to occur.

I think he's right. Those court-stormings put players in jeopardy and should be prevented. To me, the fine wasn't near large enough.

100% right.
