I am really scared that Joe C. is gonna screw this up

Things are already screwed up with Capel's firing. I honestly believe the program was starting to turn back in the right direction. I thought he should have been given one more year, but that's not the case. Just look at what all the future recruits are saying. Some of our top commits and prospects are no longer committed or interested anymore. This firing will set us back even more. We are now at least two years away from making the tournament and could be even more.

No offense Denver because I like ya buddy but Blake said on numerous times that Capel taught him things and made him a better player. As did Taylor and LL and WW. Not to mention Cade Davis!

Of course he did. Any coach would. I could teach Blake Griffin things about basketball if given the opportunity but that would not remotely make me responsible for turning Blake Griffin into the player he is or demonstrate that I should coach a d-1 team (or any team).

Don't take this as me thinking I know more about basketball than Blake Griffin or Jeff Capel. I don't. I just don't think having a great player on your team means you are a great coach. I think things like win/loss record, record in close games, a system and how you do in bad years is what distinguishes one coach from the next. Great college coaches win 18-20 games even when they lack talent. Great college coaches win close games. Great college coaches have great win/loss records. Great college coaches have a clearly defined system.

1. Billy Gillispie
2. Terry Evans

04, i just dont get the love fest for Evans...i like the guy, but other than his Oklahoma roots for recruiting why do you think he would be a guy that could not only get us back, but sustain it?

He wins and his style will attract athletes. If you can surround him with experienced assistants at the D1 level, I'm not opposed to it at all. Not one of my first choices, but I think they could do worse.

So we fired Jeff Capel, who was criticized for not having enough experience, to hire a guy, Terry Evans, who has never coached at the D-1 level?

Evans wouldn't think every east coast baller is better than what we have in this part of the country. I would also bet Evans would want to be here and would connect with the fan base, something Capel failed to do.

Evans also has a defined system, again, something Capel did not have.

Evans would be here forever...Capel was only here until something better came along but that never happened.

That staff would be very important with him...

Do you think he would get a pass for a few years if he didnt win right away?

That is another concern i would have...because even though i think their roster is set up to do decent next year i think it could take him some time to ramp up the recruiting without the wins to show for it...

That is why it would probably be better to get a more established D1 coach which has some recruiting connections. May take Evans too long to build connections (pure speculation obviously)(

"Blake made us good, Capel made us bad. Got it."

You finally get it! I thought that was obvious.

I'm glad to finally see why people are opposed to Geno rather than just dismissing it out of hand.

Those opposed have valid points, but I'm still intrigued.

1. His age.
2. He is an east-coaster. He'd be out of place here.
3. Lack of experience in the men's game.
4. Lack of ties to this part of the country.
5. I don't think he'd get the same respect from boys, that he does from his girls.
6. It's easy to coach when you can get the best talent as he does now. Would he be as sucessful if he couldn't land top notch talent?
7. Would he be able to evaluate guys, after only evaluating women for so long.

In my opinion, he would be a horrible choice to rebuild the program. If you were a top 10 program he might be able to maintain it or move it forward.

But can you imagine the negative recruiting? Do you want to go play for a girl's coach? What are you a sissy boy? It would be very, very difficult for him to get the top recruits to rebuild our program. He would start in a bigger hole than we are already in.

+1

I think it would be a horrible hire at this time.

Joe needs to read the book Women are from Venus, Men are from Mars before he tries to hire Geno.

I've never read the book. How does it pertain to this?

The book is actually about relationships and not coaching. My point was that women are different from men and just because he is successful coaching women does not equate to being successful coaching men.

Dealing with women is a lot different than dealing with men. Motivating women is a lot different than motivating men. Assessing character qualities is a lot different with women than with men.

This!

Everyone who thought this season was as bad as it gets.....hold on tight! We might just be witnessing a nightmare in the making. I've always supports Joe C's decisions, but the timing of this one was poor unless there's something we don't know.

Being upset about recruiting is ridiculously short-sighted. Of course prospects are going to have this reaction after the guy who has been recruiting them is fired. Just like it's not surprising to see Blake defending Capel.

I'm not concerned about recruits reaction at all at this point.

Exactly. I'm especially not concerned about any Capel recruits who are going to other schools. Jeff proved he wasn't very good at character evaluation and not to mention rarely did his players ever make it past year 2 so some of these guys would probably only be here 1 year if they even stuck to their commitment.

While I do agree in some part with your opinion. Let me start with I am not partial to any coach yet, but if we got Buzz Williams there is a chance OJ Mayo's bro would follow him to OU...

I do believe that if Capel was here next year we would have been better as a team but the attendance at the games would have still been poor. Firing him was the only real chance at having a worse off season than this year...
