March Madness and Covid-19

I can’t find the numbers anywhere yet. Just a bunch of people pissed off at Massie.

Just popping in for a minute while eating at my desk.

1. There is no vote total, it was a voice vote.
2. I have heard from a reliable source, a nurse in New York, at the hospital where she works, that they are taking people off of ventilators and giving them to younger people that they might be able to save.
3. The virus is moving through the Midwest and South now. Louisiana is a major hotspot, the virus will diffuse from Louisiana to surrounding states.
4. Covid-19 in St. Louis, Indianapolis and other cities in that region is in the log phase. Missouri has been especially slow to get their testing going considering they have two huge metropolitan areas.
5. Things here are ramping up even more. We still don't have the testing capacity, the PPE, or the ventilators that we need, which is crazy because we are the federal government. I can't imagine what private hospitals are going through.

Trump said this yesterday:

“I don't believe you need 40,000 or 30,000 ventilators. You go into major hospitals sometimes, and they’ll have two ventilators. And now all of a sudden they’re saying, ‘Can we order 30,000 ventilators?’”- Donald Trump

And today he is tweet yelling at New York, Ford, GM, and others to produce more ventilators.

He's an idiot.

Are you familiar with the video I posted on the previous page? The doctor is a surgeon in a 1200 bed hospital in NYC, a reported hotbed for the Covid-19 virus. He doesn’t downplay the risks by any means. But he seems to have a more optimistic view of our chances to overcome the outbreak, as well as protect ourselves from the virus.

Assuming you have found the time to watch this video, do you agree or disagree with Doctor Price’s take on the virus? If you disagree, can you comment on the differences? Thanks!

He's way smarter than a surgeon! He's pulm-crit.

He dispels a lot of what appears to be false information. Everyone on this site should take the time to watch so they can take the necessary precautions and not getting caught up with worrying about things beyond their control. Thank you Ada.

Agreed. I had it on 2x speed while I cooked. I just wanted to clarify that he was pulm-crit...which along with infectious disease are the most qualified group of physicians to speak on the current crisis.

Surgeons are stoopid.

Omg where to start. First of all, he gets it wrong in the first 5 minutes. He said “this is a coronavirus, it’s the same family of viruses as the common cold.” Wrong! There are about 7 known viruses in the family of coronavirus that cause disease in humans and none of them are the common cold. Those are rhinoviruses.

Then he says you need “sustained direct contact with someone and then you get it by touching your face.” That true, you can get it that way but the data does not support that as the MAIN source of transmission. You do NOT need sustained contact with someone to catch this virus! This virus has a Ro of 3. That means that on average of you have the virus you will infect 3 other people. To put that in perspective, the seasonal flu has a Ro of about 1. THIS IS 3 TIMES MORE CONTAGIOUS! That means it’s almost certainly mainly passed by droplet transmission and some scientists think it’s airborne. For instance, there’s a church in Arkansas. They weren’t having services, but on 3/11 they had a children’s program at the church. This caused a huge Covid-19 outbreak. Just from going to that ONE event, 37 people and counting have tested positive for the virus. Are you telling me that all those people had “sustained close contact” with a carrier? No, they were just in the same building. Look at New Orleans. They had a huge outbreak after Mardi Gras. Those are just people milling around each other and passing by each other. It doesn’t take “sustained contact.” Why is this guy giving people a false sense of security? It really pisses me off. That’s what I hate about using YouTube as a source. You can find anyone to tell you what you want to hear.

Please read what the experts at the CDC say about the transmission of the virus, they do epidemiology for a living and they refute what this guy says with such certainty. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prepare/transmission.html

Not all. A couple of my surgeon friends struggle with bedside manners, but they’re still good physicians.

When he mentions "sustained contact," to me that meant breathing the air of someone w/the virus for a period of time (he said 15-30 minutes), as opposed to touching a surface with droplets which only then requires bringing the hand(s) to the face. Is that not how you read it? He mentions opening a door and not putting your hand to the face, but followed by washing your hands. How would that qualify as "sustained contact."

This is the most complete, informative video I have seen on the Covid-19 Virus. The doctor is on the frontline of patient care at one of the premier hospitals in NYC. It’s long (around 52 minutes), but well worth the time it will take you to watch it. He answered all of my questions about this virus, especially those pertaining to protecting myself as well as members of my family.

Sorry if it has already been posted.

Well, he may be (and sure seems) all up and intelligent about the disease and treatment ... but he doesn't know dick about cleanliness protocols.

Absent spot testing (frisking and internal) you must establish cleanliness then follow cleanliness protocols. It's not a matter of "scaring" people into compliance as he seems to suggest. It's what is required to show protection with unknown contaminants at unknown levels with unknown transmission data. You establish a clean area and entry via control point then slowly work to expand it. Same process used by the CDC, NRC, IAEA, WHO, and USN Naval Reactors.

Understanding the biology of it helps in establishing cleanliness standards, but there's more to it than that.

The Mayo Clinic’s website disagrees with you.

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/coronavirus/symptoms-causes/syc-20479963

I won’t bother to address your other objections, except to say he clearly stated there were exceptions. I also think even you will agree the news about this virus is changing almost daily.

Three weeks ago you were one of the least popular posters on this board due to your negativity. I came to your defense when you were being accused of only showing up after a loss.

I think I speak for everyone when I say your efforts to keep us informed have been appreciated. Still, I’ll take the word of a M.D. in a prominent NYC hospital over a laboratory technologist and not think twice about it. The Mayo Clinic also agrees with what Doctor Price said regarding the coronavirus family.

If Boulder wants this thread to continue as one of the most depressing discussions this board has ever seen, that’s fine by me. But I’m going to do what some of my friends have already done: Avoid this thread like the plague. People my age need an occasional source of hope, not a steady diet of doom and gloom. Doctor Price gives us that!

Please don't go. You'll be back tomorrow like a bunny rabbit stalking another quicky relationship. It's in your blood so hop to it!

Re: March Madness and Covid-1

just because someone has medical knowledge doesn't make them masters of either immunology or mass decon procedures. it's more of a specialized discipline. many of the CDC field people are ex navy nukes ... same for WHO and the IAEA.

Re: March Madness and Covid-1

I love it when someone asks for my opinion specifically, and then blasts me for providing it.

I think what is of upmost importance in all of this, as it pertains to the pandemic, is sourceable information/guidelines which are accurate in which those who are obviously worried or scared can utilize.

I do not think there is relevance to be granted to those things which are feelings, egos and the like where there should be no place for it in this instance. People are truly worried.

Agreed.

I agree with you, but I didn’t get the impression the NYC doc was trying to set himself up as an expert in any specialized field. He said from the beginning his hospital’s specialty was organ transplants (heart, lungs, liver, etc). He made it clear most of what he said was from experience with patients in their 1200 bed hospital. He also said more than once there were exceptions.

Log into as many web sites as you have time for and you will find a difference of opinion from one to the next. There are no true “experts.” This virus is too new. It’s also changing. My problem is that I am tired of logging out of my favorite basketball fan board with a serious case of the depression. You don’t need that either.

To set the record straight, I’m not depressed. That was just my way of saying this thread is too much of a reminder of what my/our lives have become. I’m ready for more recruiting news or posts about next year’s players, anything to get our collective minds on brighter days ahead.

His anecdotal experience is no substitute for thousands of epidemiological data points worldwide.

Looking at a relatively tiny group of patients in one hospital is no way to do epidemiology. I just hope this guy doesn’t get too cocky and catch the disease.

Things will take care of themselves at some point in time and we will once again return to what you see as "hoops board normalcy." Personally speaking, I would not script it as normal, but to each his own.
