March Madness and Covid-19

I'm trying to not be rude Msproud but do a little research on why shutting down the country is worse than covid19. Start with the increased suicide rate and go from there. We can't shut down every flu season. Car accidents kill around 3k in the US every day and we will continue to drive.

Shutting down the country is not worse than Covid-19 if you prefer fewer dead Americans. That's like saying, "My blood sugar and ketones are way down and I've avoided diabetic ketoacidisis. STUPID INSULIN!"

We have a vaccine and a treatment for the flu. It's apples and oranges.

Also, suicide already kills 50,000 people a year.... About 1 in 5 Americans were already on anti-depressants. We have systemic problems with insecurity in this country. The loss of a job, a big medical bill, stress, month to month living, stagnant wages (can't get ahead), etc are some of the big ones.... But it all boils down to insecurity. 50,000 people a year are killing themselves and another huge batch of American's are medicating themselves... That doesn't even include the people self-medicating with alcohol, marijuana, etc.

And all that was BEFORE Covid-19.

We have systemic issues in the country, that all boil down to insecurity in my opinion.

I can't say anymore though without getting political. I would be happy to continue that thought on the off-topic board if anyone is interested.

There are medical based causes for suicide and drug use beyond just folks being insecure about their lives. Insecurity is a state of mind while things such as addictive personalities and compulsive behavior are not. Just because something exists in society does not make it okay if its scope were to broaden and bring down more people. The process does not make it acceptable.

I think shutting down the country was the right thing to do. If we had a vaccine and/or an effective medication I wouldn’t say that.

My wife and I have been in self-imposed isolation for well over a month. That was the right thing to do, too. But we’re ready for it to be over!

We all are ready, that's for sure. Can't wait to take my girlfriend to dinner again, but we understand that it's important to stay home. Our favorite place is Jinya, a ramen bar in Tulsa, when this is all over you guys should check it out.

In other words, you are tired of her beating you in scrabble.

And speaking of Covid: 11 deaths and 275 newly reported cases over the past 3 days. Wonder if the worst is behind us in the near term.

It’s good to see you spending more time on the basketball threads than reporting on Covid-19!

I hope that means there are some positive signs and possibly brighter days ahead. Not a time to go back to business as usual, just a better outlook than you had this time last week. Is that an accurate assessment?

Of course brighter days are ahead but I'm not letting up one bit. I am very concerned that we will try to "reopen" too soon. Even South Korea, which everyone admits did a great job corralling this virus from the early stages, is having a resurgence in cases. Oklahoma is still not doing social distancing very well. My concern is that we are just lagging behind the hotspots by a week or two. It doesn't take long once you get in the log phase for cases to explode. Deaths will lag a week or two behind the increase in cases. Hopefully, what we are doing will keep working, let's hope we have the will to keep it up.

I've been in the basketball threads because I really need a diversion from my work at times, and of course OU basketball is my first love.

By the way, if any of you guys are veterans in the Tulsa area, there is going to be a drive-thru Covid-19 testing site set up at the 41st st. clinic Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th. If you are having symptoms, call your provider and set up an appointment.

We all need a diversion. The recruiting news couldn’t have come at a better time.

Not even if it saves lives?

Saving lives and opening up certain parts of the economy are not mutually exclusive. I believe there is a way to begin to slowly open up things while also taking precautions to protect those most vulnerable to the virus.

Unfortunately, I don't know that we have the complete data necessary as of yet to enable us to definitively say we can begin incrementally "doing this", but we need to "hold off doing that". I think what is clear, at least to me, is that high density population areas are much more vulnerable to spikes then more rural areas.

The other piece to this is that the experts still don't know even close to everything. There are unknowns and uncertainties regarding this pandemic and because of that, decisions are likely going to have to be made with an element of uncertainty and risk to the general public. We can't keep virtually everything shut down for much longer without long-term consequences to the economy. Within a week or two, I believe we will know a little more and can proceed with some type of plan to at least get some people back to work relatively safely.

Absolutely! I've been watching some old games on YouTube when I have time.

One of my favorite teams and games of all time.

Thanks for the link! Gives me something fun to do. No doubt in my mind OU was the best team in the country that year. Proves how hard it is to beat a team three times in one season, especially when Danny Manning is on the roster.

I’m not trying to be rude, but your examples are even close to what we’re experiencing.

The noble duty of science - the scientist - is to expose Truth by applying the Scientific Method. However, the forces of Darkness & the Deep State made "science" into the oldest profession. #FireFauci is the call of the awakened MANY - YOU - to return Science to its noble purpose

What a lunatic
