March Madness and Covid-19

What were the side effects? QT prolongation in and of itself doesn't really mean anything. It may predispose you to Torsades, but simply increasing the QTc is a small price to pay for a drug if it actually works against COVID. Also, nobody I know of is giving anywhere near 1200 daily for 10 days. Most are doing something more along the lines of 800 on day 1 followed by 4 days of 400. Load them up with Mg and K and move on. I've given plaquenil to about 100 patients and haven't seen a single one go into torsades.

Thanks for the info!

Thanks Eielson. It's always nice to have a physician on the thread to clarify some of the misassumptions that are presented on this thread.

I will assume torsades is some kind of rhythm issue. that's way past my pay grade. I am still trying to understand the potassium chemistry. so you've taken an EKG on all your quinine patients? cool.

Spoke with a medical (clinical) researcher at Harvard over the weekend and was told a pharmaceutical company filed to have a vaccine tested and the process, which usually takes 6 months to occur, took 13 days! Was also told the FDA is 100% centric on the virus and nothing else.

That is good to hear. That is how it should be right now, but I know dollars and politics sometimes get in the way of things. We should be expediting, to the extent possible, EVERYTHING that is being done related to CV.

A lot of the length of time it takes related to medicinal stuff is purely red tape related.

100% correct. The size of the apparatus woven by big pharma and the federal government cannot be exaggerated.

If they find something, they'll get it through at warp speed.....and they'll close the loopholes just as quickly.

I believe I read 2 pharma companies were combining forces to develop a vaccine which should also reduce the timeframe. They still have to do human testing but we should all cross our fingers a successful vaccine gets here ASAP.

They’ve also expanded the convalescent plasma donations to study that potential as well, which could help if a second wave hits us before we get a vaccine.

Clarity from Eielson and positive news from sheepdogs1 is a welcome change from 122 pages of mostly doom and gloom!

Thanks, guys!

Having to remind people that being optimistic is a good thing....however, it can take some endurance, especially in times like these. The fear and panic peddling is rampant, but do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but rather be transformed by the renewal of your mind.

That's my Stuart Smalley thought for the day.:D

Romans 12:2. Good advice!

I’m not sure about the details but 11 patients died in the group that was given 600 mg per day.

It says 11/81 patients died before it was stopped. I don't have time to read every small study that comes out, and this one hadn't popped up on my radar, but I'm willing to bet my paycheck that those 11 patient died from COVID rather than chloroquine. The one caveat is that I will say that I don't know chloroquine dosages that well off the top of my head -- I've only been using hydroxychloroquine.
