March Madness and Covid-19

Right but its only been 3 months.... Hopefully it doesn't get to the other number.

I think we all hope the loss of life will not get much worse. My point was simply that the virus has not spread nearly as fast as the experts predicted a few months ago. While the number of deaths is still alarming, I think the number of recoveries now that testing is being ramped up is a statistic that deserves more press.

I get that posters like steverocks35 may be concerned that people will take this virus lightly if they think it’s safe to let our collective guards down. But anyone who would do that is a fool. Not one member in our circle of family, friends and neighbors is prepared to return to “life as usual” anytime soon.

From what I've read thus far, nobody in this thread comes even close to an expert. This should not still be a debate.

We live in a society where people trip over their own.........so as to apply labels, be it good or bad, on others. Even experts have flaws and are fallible because we are all flawed and fallible to a point. Maybe what is being said should take precedence over who says it.

By the way, nothing that I've seen is making me soften my stance. You don't take off your parachute 1,000 feet from the ground because you think you don't need it anymore. Hope I'm wrong about all this!

<Comes in and sees a Bret Stephens column, logs off laughing>

:ez-roll:

1) Do you know what logging off means? You posted immediately after.
2) It's funny that you are laughing, because I was literally mocking you with that post. In essence, you are laughing at yourself....join the club.

I came back to post, because I wanted to share my current view.

That second part is funny coming from a guy that a few weeks ago said this whole thing was a worldwide mass delusion. And a doctor no less.

Is that based off of your vast experience managing COVID patients?

I never said I managed Covid patients. But it's a fact that the last two months I've worked on almost nothing else but Covid-19 related topics.

Where did you get your view that this was a worldwide mass delusion?

Serious question. Do you respect anyone except the guy you see when you look in the mirror every morning?

You have laughed at physicians and surgeons in major hospitals, at professionals on a variety of levels who may not agree with you, and now you’re making fun of a doctor on this board who has been a member here since 2015.

I’ll give you this much. You have come a long way from the poster who was thought to be a troll not long ago.

I am not making fun of Eielson, but he did call this a "worldwide mass delusion" not too long ago, which I only brought up after he ridiculed me.
I respect many people, all kinds of physicians and professionals and also non-professionals but I also don't fall into the logical fallacy called the "appeal to authority."

Let's run this conversation back for you with the exact quotes:

But you’re assuming that we aren’t really at risk when we know that this virus is at minimum 8 times more lethal than seasonal flu for even healthy people.

We have no idea if it's actually 8X more lethal than the flu. These numbers are highly flawed, and mortality rates tend to plummet as we progress. I expect the numbers to be much different when the dust settles. There is a lot of uncertainty at the moment.

How are the numbers highly flawed? If they were highly flawed why would the world be taking these drastic actions? I don’t know any country that would put their economy in the tank based on flawed numbers. What you are saying is that the world has undergone a mass delusion.

In conclusion - I said that the original data on the mortality rates was highly flawed and that it would plummet once we had better data. That's exactly what has happened, and you're mocking me...why?

After I said that you were saying the world has undergone a mass delusion you said something along the lines of "That's exactly what I'm saying." I didn't dig back through all the posts but I notice you didn't post your reply here. I mean, approximately 53,000 people (probably more based on the reports of undercounting) have died in the last 3 months in the US alone so you can hardly call that a mass delusion.

What are you even rambling about at this point? I'm not going to follow you on this poorly constructed strawman argument. I just quoted the argument, and it speaks for itself. Read it again and tell me where I was wrong.

You didn't include all your replies. After those posts I asked you if you really thought the world was undergoing a mass delusion and you said "that's exactly what I'm saying" (or something along those lines, I didn't wade back through 100 pages to find your exact words.) I don't think anyone would say it's a worldwide mass delusion at this point. That's pretty simple, right?

Let me add something. I totally respect what you do Eielson, treating patients on the front lines. I take my hat off to you.
