March Madness and Covid-19

That's a weird take.

I'd look at it more this way. The barn door was left open and 1 or 2 animals got out. We shut the door, locking the other 10 animals inside. Sure, we have to go get those 2 animals that got out, but chasing down 2 is much easier than chasing down 12.

Your analogy doesn't work, because it's all or nothing. Those 2 animals aren't deadly and they don't reproduce exponentially. If you knew that the 2 animals could kill you and that in a few hours the 2 animals could be 2 billion animals.. well you see why it fails.

There was absolutely zero chance we could shut down travel from China before a single case made it over here. None. If that is your expectation, well.....you are wrong. That is a ridiculous take if that is what you are saying.

Then there was no point in a travel ban, because once a wildfire is raging, does it matter if it started from a match or a burning oil drum? NOPE

That’s your take. WTSooner’s analogy makes perfectly good sense to me. The “world according to steverocks35” is wearing thin on me, and I’ll bet I’m not alone. I won’t bother trying to explain how blocking several thousand people from entering this country was better than a few hundred. You wouldn’t buy it anyway. Did you really think shutting down our borders to two dozen or more countries would keep everyone out? I didn’t.

2. The federal government CAN wave a magic wand and make supplies appear in a national emergency. It's called the Defense Production Act. This law was passed for exactly this kind of situation. I can't think of a more apt scenario for the use of this law, other than a world war. They can invoke this act, and direct manufacturers to make the supplies we need, and then direct those supplies to the places where they are needed the most..

didn't the gov inact the defense production act??

the tide this morning is starting to turn on CNBC Foxbusiness and bascily all national business publications

as well as NYT op ed WSJ op ed ect

people are starting to understand the economic impact this "shutdown" is having and can have ..

i would guess we as a country switch to a shelter the old and most at risk and everyone else goes back to normal in the next 2 weeks ..

I think the travel ban would have worked if we had paired it with aggressive screening, quarantine, and an amped up testing regime, but we didn't do any of those things until it was way too late.

As I mentioned before, my girlfriend's mom flew in from the Philippines on March 14th. She walked right in the terminal at DFW and wasn't screened at all!

This was barely a week ago!

I'm sorry if you don't like the world according to me, but I'm giving my observations in real time, backed up by facts and expertise.

Nope! He said he invoked it, then multiple people in the administration, including the head of FEMA, contradicted him. All of the companies have denied being directed to manufacture anything.

The less people we have in the country spreading the disease the better right?

There was likely somebody already in the US with it before we (as a country) were even aware it (CV) existed.

impact shmimpact - money doesn't mean anything if you're dead. you save lives FIRST. it's the a priori concern. unless we take this more seriously we risk the very existence of our country. this isn't a joke and it's rather unnerving how many treat this as a minor inconvenience.

You might be going a little heavy on "inconvenience". Maybe a little. Most of everyone will pull through this just fine and for these people they want to know what lies for them at the end of the rainbow. I don't think this is overly selfish on their part for people, inherently, do not like uncertainty (we always want to know the whereabouts of our keys and phone). I'm sure you can find people who mirror your sentiments and some of these people are the very same people who helped to spread the virus. Go figure.

And we hope he's at least doing better.

you are correct about this part ..

but this is about the economic inpact not the death toll ..

From a purely economic viewpoint those who are at the twilight of their trip through this world have already contributed most, if not all, of their economic impact while the younger generations are just getting their feet wet. It is a different assessment.

i am not talking about losing or making money

our entire way of life is at risk

full break down of our system

So as I understand it, the stimulus bill is being held up by disagreements over:
  • Additional collective bargaining power for unions
  • Increase wind/solar tax credits
  • Increased emission regulations for airlines

What the above items have to do with helping people in the here and now, I will never understand.

BTW, I'm not a fan of corporate bailouts either, however I can get over temporary assistance as long as Congress approves payments to American workers and loans to small businesses......the people that need it.

There should be NOTHING else in the bill. Period. It should be 100% about helping the people and companies most affected by this. Dems showing their true colors.
