MUSKOGEE — Trena Mims may not have been on the floor to start the game Tuesday night, but she sure knew how to finish it.

The junior guard scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half, helping Muskogee’s second-ranked girls hold off No. 1 Broken Arrow 63-55 for a share of first place in the Frontier Valley Conference.

“It was Senior Night, so (not starting) didn’t bother me,” she said.

As the Roughers’ only non-senior starter, Mims gave up her spot to honor senior Taylor Osborne to begin the game.

But she was inserted into the action quickly, and dished four first-half assists as the Roughers beat the cold-shooting Tigers in transition for easy layups and led 26-21 at intermission.

She scored five quick points to start the third quarter as the Tigers zeroed in on Rougher standouts Jada Ford and Aaliyah Wilson.

“They were trying to get back and contain (Ford and Wilson), and that opened more lanes for me,” said Mims, who kept attacking the paint for layups and fouls.

She went 5-for-9 from the field and 6-for-7 from the line, part of a sterling team effort by the Roughers. They were 18-for-21 overall from the line, 17-for-19 in the second half, and made 11 straight before the first miss.

Ford scored 23 points and hit her 174th and 175th career 3-pointers, and is now five shy of 1,500 career points.

Wilson, whose family and friends wore T-shirts commemorating her selection to play in the McDonald’s All-American game, had 16 points and 12 rebounds.

The Roughers (19-2, 12-1) moved even with BA in the conference standings and avenged losses to the Tigers in the last two meetings. One of those was BA’s 71-67 overtime triumph in the 6A championship game last March.

Muskogee has won 11 straight since its 62-54 loss at Broken Arrow on Jan. 12.

“I think we finally put together four good quarters tonight,” Muskogee coach Doyle Rowland said. “Broken Arrow is a great team and they’re not two-time defending state champs for nothing. But we are pretty good, too, and when we play a complete game, we can play with anybody.”

Darian Jackson, Aysia Evans and Alexis Gaulden paced the Tigers (19-3, 12-1) with 17, 16 and 15 points, respectively. But BA shot only 33 percent (18-for-54) and sharpshooters Gaulden and Evans were a combined 4-for-19 from 3-point range.

The game was tied six times before Muskogee took the lead by scoring eight straight points late in the first half. The lead peaked at 42-29 on a pair of Wilson free throws in the third quarter, but the Tigers tried to make a game of it.

The Tigers got within 51-47 with 4:34 left, but Mims and Wilson followed with baskets and the Roughers built the lead back to 58-49 with 1:11 left.

“We didn’t shoot the ball well tonight and we knew it would be tough to play here,” Broken Arrow coach Mike Hughes said. “But this will give us incentive to try and come back and be a little better.”

The Tigers and Roughers will tie for the Frontier crown if both win or lose their final regular-season games. Muskogee plays Friday at Bishop Kelley and Broken Arrow goes to Bartlesville.
