Not today. You can't fire him in the middle of the season, that would be disasterous.

You cant win 0-4 games in the league and keep your job at OU, especially coming off a 13 win season.

There are no more Central Arkansas teams, Maryland Eastern Shores, etc to take the pressure off. Conference teams will have their way with OU, they will continue to get blown out, and the pressure on Capel will mount to an unsustainable level. Its reality time, and that reality probably will not be good.

As for firing him today, the only problem with that is A.) Recruiting, and B.) You probably wont win another game all year if you do that. I wouldn't be too upset if it happened though, because it would give Joe C. a chance to start contacting guys early.

Not today, but immediately following the season. He just seems to be in over his head and hasn't surrounded himself with any assistants with any considerable experience. But if he continues to coach the way he coached the second half of the A&M game (no adjustments, no substitutions), he can go today.

right after the last game, but it wont happen, they will give him another yr

Another issue... who from the staff could step in as interim coach? As anyone besides Capel ever coached at anywhere near this level? What a nightmare.

Ben Betts was a HC at South Carolina State

So no not at this level. Not an impressive staff to say the least.

I'm rapidly losing whatever faith I had in Coach Capel. As I said in yesterday's game thread, it's not just that we're losing -- it's how we're losing. I can't stomach seeing our Sooners blown out over and over, and though I've never claimed to be an X's and O's genius (not by a long shot), I have to believe that, even with the talent we have on hand, there's a way to be more competitive than we've been three out of five seasons under Coach Capel.

It's so disheartening, and Coach Capel has no one but himself to blame, unfortunately. Even with the departure of the Terrible Trio after last season, there's no excuse for us being this bereft of talent and athleticism. It's amazing to think of all those posters who have repeatedly insisted the cupboard was bare when Capel took over before the 2007 season. I've always felt that team had a reasonable amount of talent -- enough, certainly, to make the NIT. And that squad would certainly beat this team handily.

We have not beat a BCS School in 337 days...

I thought it was already disasterous? Yeah, today would not be soon enough.

Billy Tubbs. LOL

Firing a coach in mid-season should be reserved for extremely unusual situations, not just situations where a team doesn't win enough games.

Potential coaching candidates notice how an athletic department reacts to situations like this. If you were a good coach, would you want to coach for a school that might fire you at mid-season?

Missouri did it and they ended up getting a pretty good coach IMO.

I don't post much but I will say that Coach Capel needs to go. In the past if the game was televised then there was no way I'd miss it or at least record it. I watched about 5 minutes of yesterday's game and quit watching because of the lack of talent and the basic fundamentals.

I wonder if BG made Capel seem like a better coach than what he actually is....

I think it's kinda shocking this poll is even close right now. If we had similar polls with Sampson for his career I don't think it would be 50-50 or close to it on him being fired mid season. This just shows how bad it really is right now.

No. That would only make matters worse (see many of the reasons already discussed). If the poll had included "gone after the season is over," I would have voted, YES.

Might as well face it, folks, Jeff Capel will be our coach next year, unless he decides on his own that he's had enough and wants out. I don't think he will be fired, even if OU goes ofer in conference play.

It should be obvious by now that I'm not the least bit happy with the direction of our program. I'm one of those posters skyvue mentioned who was critical of Kelvin for leaving us in a lurch. I never thought the cupboard was bare, but I was none too pleased when we lost 60% of a top five recruiting class to NCAA rules violations. Man, how I would love to have our 2007 roster right now!

I think it is the question. The cases of mid-season firings are few and far between and usually involve legal/ethical/substance abuse problems. Not just really bad coaching.

This isnt the NBA or NFL, you cant fire a coach mid season in college without legal or NCAA problems

If OU goes 0-16 in conference play (which I predict will happen) then Joe C. must make a change.
