Just curious what kinds of things are being thrown around most often for OU.

Money and the attitude toward how it's distributed are two of the main reasons MU is looking to leave, and judging by that article neither is going to change much anytime soon. They expect a unified Big 12, but aren't treating all Big 12 members equally.

Pretty much all signs point to MU, and probably Nebraska, leaving for the Big 10. What's being discussed as the plan for OU if that does happen?

Missouri is the most worthless athletic program in the nation. They have no bargaining power.

Yea, this is simply a school that has won nothing in it's two major sports taking it's ball and going home.

No final four's in basketball and no conference titles in football since 1969.

I hear from Missouri fans that they are tired of being treated like step-children, and they usually get red in the face when I tell them that is what you are.

Missouri, lol.

This whole thing is making me yawn. It also reminds me of "if a tree falls in a forest, and their is nobody there to hear it, does it make a sound?" That's what I think of when I hear about Missouri "threatening" to leave the Big 12.

Oklahoma will be moving to NAIA and joining the Sooner Athletic Conference.

Exactly. If Missouri goes to the Big 10 it will be the biggest mistake they ever make. At least in the Big 12 they are middle of the road. In the Big 10 they will quickly become another Minnesota or Northwestern.

No bargaining power = $10-15 million/year increase in TV revenue? That's what MU is positioned for...

Sounds like a big mistake.

I'm actually a bit surprised that Cheno gave MU credit for not already being another Minnesota.

This post brought a huge smile to my face.

It basically equals this:

I think Mizzou is middle of the road athletic program in the Big 12. I mean really the Big 12 isn't that great of a conference. If Mizzou goes to the Big 10 I think they are definitely in the bottom half in both basketball and football.

Missouri is not middle of the road in football.

Kansas State, Texas A&M, Colorado are middle of the road.

Missouri is tied for worst with the other perennial losers Kansas, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Texas Tech & Iowa State.

Ha Ha. I am not sure OU would have wanted to play in the Sooner Athletic Conference this year. There actually is some pretty good basketball played by the small schools.

It's been 5 years since KSU or Colorado finished ahead of Missouri in the North in football. In those same 5 years Texas A&M has had one Big 12 winning season.

From a modern standpoint, Missouri would probably be better off joining the Big 10. That conference has been awful lately (although it looks like it has the chance to be very good next year for the first time in forever) and Mizzou would probably fare a bit better if it were in that conference.

Deleted. This is not a political board.

The only thing Missouri would bring to the Big 10 is the TV markets of St Louis and possibly the Kansas City. What they would gain is their split of the TV income of the Big 10 network. It's all about the money.

I find the issue very complex. Its not about winning, it's about money. The big 10 has a larger population base so even without championships they make more money than the big 12. We have too many schools dividing the population in our region. Big if, but if we could cut out ISU, KSU, OSU and Baylor, then add a BYU, NM, Nev and Boise, the number of TV sets in the conference would increase. It would make more money for the schools but flying the baseball team to BYU or the golf team to Boise would resemble stupid.

BYU, NM, Nev and Boise State would bring more money and television viewers to the big12 than OSU, KSU, Iowa State and Baylor? That is news to me. There are reasons why all 4 of those schools aren't in major conferences right now.

I agree with your first statement that it is complex. But the biggest problem is that the big12 signed an absolutely atrocious television contract. The solution is the big12/pac10 joint venture to negotiate a tv contract that rivals the big10/sec. If that doesn't happen, conference realignment is probably going to happen. And the big12 will disintegrate. You probably end up with four super conferences of 16 teams each.

Obviously the negotiating power of schools like Iowa State, Baylor, OSU, Kansas State and Texas Tech would be less strong than OU, Nebraska, Kansas, A&M, UT, Colorado and Missouri. But the logistical/academic/television market issues make all this talk speculation in my view.

If/when the Big 12/Pac 10 television deal gets signed, the conference will likely stay intact. You may have one defection- Colorado to the Pac10 or Missouri to the Big10. But a BYU, Utah, UTEP or New Mexico would be chomping at the bit to take the defectors place.

Based on all that I've read so far, I'd expect two defections (MU and NU) as the Big 10 moves to 16 teams.

The posts suggesting it's all about the money are, to an extent, correct. MU stands to gain a ton financially from this move, and even with a Big 12/Pac 10 deal, that money won't be divided equally (Big 10 money is). The Big 10 certainly isn't bringing MU into the fold because of sustained athletic excellence on a championship level... but MU will do fine to hold its own in most sports in the Big 10 (overall nothing special compared to the Big 12).

It's also about money on the academics side. All Big 10 members are also members of the CIC. The CIC controls a huge chunk of federal research grants, and adding more members to the Big 10/CIC also adds more influence in DC, which brings in even more money for academics. Joining the Big 10 could be a huge boost for Mizzou as a University, which is actually one of the driving forces behind this as far as I can tell.

So Cheno you are saying the Big 10 is better than the Big 12?

Football there is no way from top to bottom. Basketball is about even and depending on where Mizzou goes.
