I think Trump's main appeal to his supporters boils down to one thing.....he fights.
I see more tantrums than fights.
Trump has personal character issues...no doubt. But so did Clinton, JFK, Churchill and FDR
I don't think that is really a fair assessment... Trump is extreme. Do all humans have faults? Absolutely. Have we had quirky world leaders? You bet. Trump is on the extreme end of that. I think it is a little disingenuous to be like, "yea, Trump has a character issue, but Churchhill was crass and a drunk"... Like I said, he is on the extreme end. Maybe the most extreme example of number of character issues.
One question though.... do you believe he is dumb? How would you rate his intelligence compared to other Presidents?
Having said that, I have been pleasantly surprised and in agreement with most of his policies. He has governed far more conservative/libertarian that I could have imagined
I am in disagreement with most of policies. Of course, there are just some things everyone can agree on. In terms of Supreme Court justices, those were basically fed to him by the Federalist Society, who claimed he could throw a dart and hit anyone on their list and they would be happy.
I believe a large segment of folks on the right had grown tired of being told how bad they were (racist, greedy, sexist, etc.) from the Obama Administration, most of the media, universities, Hollywood, etc. and it finally boiled over. Add to that, another segment of voters were sick of business as usual in DC and clamored for an outsider.
Things like racism, greed, sexism, etc are typically not considered admirable attributes of man, or society. If I hate homosexuality, and some new world order comes in and tells me I am bad for hating gay people, they are probably going to be mad. Doesn't justify the mindset. However, it's not really something an administration can weed out. Time will weed these things out. In the 1950's it was a big deal that a white woman date a black man. Time weeded that out. Before that, it was a big deal that a black man have any rights. Time weeded that out. Of course, it helps when society turns on the sentiment. Eventually white people got involved in civil rights in the 1960's and pushed through reforms that were needed for equality.
He's taken on China, worked to resolve some issues in the Middle East and made the US energy independent. The economy under his watch (until recently) has been robust.
It's always good for a demagogue to have a foe. China and Mexicans are his foe. Our business leaders and political figures sold out to China for a really long time. But he describes Xi as his close friend, and he knows he needs China. Plus, not much he can really do about China at this point, it's too late.
The US was already energy independent.
There are, of course, certain things I agree with... I don't agree with a lot of his politics... but treating veterans better, treating active-duty soldiers better, ending wars (which hasn't been as quick as I expected), making favorable trade deals, etc are things I would expect most people to be in favor of.
