Only three players remain from Midwest City’s state title run two years ago, and they want nothing more than one last state tournament.
Friday night was what they believe to be the first step.
“We’re not done yet,” said Midwest City senior guard McKenzie Patton, who was a sophomore in the 2016 title run.
No. 15-ranked Midwest City beat No. 18 Moore 56-46 to open the Class 6A regional tournament and advance to a matchup with No. 1 Putnam West for the regional championship.
Putnam West routed Lawton 93-47. Midwest City awaits at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
The Bombers (16-8) didn’t have it easy, though.
They held red-hot Moore to just 17 first-half points.
But Moore (14-10) found a way to get within four with 3:40 remaining on a 3-pointer from Kelsi Fitzgerald. Looking to get even closer, Midwest City freshman Kennedi Grant came up with a steal and layup that kicked off a 12-6 run to end the game.
“Once she got that steal it put a fire back in us,” Patton said.
Moore was led by freshman Aaliyah Moore, who scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Midwest City’s duo of Patton and Reneya Hopkins were too much with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Each scored six in the final quarter.
