Kansas, the unanimous No. 1 team in the country in every preseason publication, is also the choice to win the conference title in a vote of the league’s head coaches. The Jayhawks received all 11 possible first-place votes in polling for the 2009-10 season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own teams.

The Jayhawks bring back nearly all their scoring from a year ago, including all five starters. KU is led by senior Sherron Collins and junior Cole Aldrich, who were both All-Big 12 First Team selections last season. Kansas also welcomes one of the nation’s top recruiting classes as it looks to build on its 27-8 record and NCAA region semifinal appearance from a year ago.

Texas was selected second behind KU and received the other first-place vote. The Longhorns return four starters and have been touted as a top five team nationally by most college basketball experts. UT will have four of its top five scorers back on the court this season and also boasts a group of newcomers that was recognized as one of the best in the country.

Oklahoma, Kansas State and Texas A&M were next in the predictions at third, fourth and fifth. All three squads competed in the postseason a year ago. The fourth-place ranking in the preseason poll matches the highest ever for K-State (2007-08).

Two teams that won NCAA games last season - Oklahoma State and Missouri - are next at sixth and seventh. Iowa State was picked eighth and will welcome back one of the nation’s top players in junior forward Craig Brackins. Texas Tech, Baylor, Nebraska and Colorado rounded out the poll.

The Big 12 season gets underway on Friday, November 13 with seven schools in action. Conference play begins Saturday, January 9 with five league contests.

The Big 12 Conference will hold its preseason media day on Thursday, October 22 in Kansas City - site of the 2010 Phillips 66 Big 12 Basketball Championships.

Team (First place votes) Points

1. Kansas (11)* 121
2. Texas (1) 111
3. Oklahoma 95
4. Kansas State 92
5. Texas A&M 74
6. Oklahoma State 69
7. Missouri 66
8. Iowa State 57
9. Texas Tech 34
10. Baylor 33
11. Nebraska 27
12. Colorado 13

I have no idea why A&M is getting so much respect. Losing Elonu should have caused them to drop further imo. Also looks like the coaches don't follow my ISU to the dance prediction. haha

I think #3 in conference (four at the worst) is about right for this team. I've said for sometime that OU is going to surprise a few people.

Absolutely made my day.

416 total points for the South
376 for the North.

This is scientific proof that the South is better.

Oh, and Kansas sucks. We are all K-State'ers now.

The Big 12 coaches must really respect Drew.

Funny isn't it. All that talent and Scott Drew is picked 10th by his peers. Tells you all you need to know about his coaching ability.

meh, their impartiality is suspect. it's well known that they all hate drew.

3rd seems about right, though I could see as low as 5th. We have alot to replace from last year, but we also return a stud in WW, a 4th year starter in Tony Crocker, some bigs that have been around (Wright, Allen), to go with the talented newcomers (Tiny, TMG, Pledger, and Fitz).

I really think if a point guard can establish himself, and Pilgrim can be a solid Big XII 4, than OSU could be the 3rd best team in conference. If not, they'll have trouble scoring against the better defensive teams, and could end up 6th or 7th.

I love it, the pokes are all pissy because their ranked 6th in this poll. :D

The only way that I see OSU finishing third in this year's league is if Byron Eaton gains another year of eligability. OU and KSU are both better imo.

once Drew starts rolling his fellow coaches on a regular basis, they will like him better. Traditional powers want Baylor to be the doormat and since Drew doesn't know his "place" when it comes to recruiting, it pisses off some coaches. I'm sure Barnes ranked Baylor 12th because he is petty like that.

Like it really matters what preseason polls are. Baylor was rated third last year- I guess the coaches hated Drew when they rated them that high last year? I would buy stock in Iowa State and Baylor and sell short OU, OSU and A&M based on the coaches poll.

Wow, tell us how your really feel.

Don't forget our bet bud. I look forward to speaking hoops with you on here without all the pro Baylor/Drew crap. It is going to be hard for you with Perry coming in...:D

I will make a deal with you ftw. If Drew gets this team to better than .500 in conference this year (9-7 minimum) then I will personally quit ragging on his coaching. IF he doesn't (Which he won't) then you need to quit blowing Drew/Baylor smoke up our arses every post and just be a regular old poster (I like your hoops opinions and knowledge). What do you say?
