2019 Recruiting

I think we need another PG to back up or start along with Harmon.

Coach, could Bienemy be that backup PG? He’s only 6’4” but is probably better suited to run the offense than someone like Christian James.... no knock on James. I look at Bienemy more like Isaiah Cousins.

I’m obviously not CoachTalk, nor am I a coach, but I agree that Jamal Bieniemy might not be a bad choice to run our offense in a backup role.

He is listed as a combo or a shooting guard on most web sites, but 247Sports has him listed as a point guard. He is such a smooth athlete, he makes everything look easy. But, there is not much he can’t do from the guard position, and that includes play the two or swing to the one if need be.

Both of you are correct I think we will Use Jamal as PG. we’ll know more when games get here, but cousins is a good start.

I just like that pure PG sometimes

Opinion: Etienne and Graham are the likely next 2 verbals. Recruiting is a swamp and I believe the coaches are Doing an excellent job.Maybe we will have one or two surprises.

Top-50 forward Malik Hall is being joined at Oklahoma today by committed big Victor Iwuakor, top-35 sophomore Trey Alexander & juco center Corbin Merritt

Good to know and very good to see who is there this recruiting weekend. Thanks for the update.

3.4 points per game and 2.2 rebounds a game in JUCO. I’m just not seeing it.

You could be right but he was named preseason top 50 in JUCO. I know nothing about him except the highlight video I saw. He might have a contingent offer, all I know is he got offered for a reason.

Do we know that he actually has an offer?

Evan Daniels shows he has an offer.

To be honest, I don’t see it either. He’s definitely got the size I have been asking for. Guess we’ll have to trust Lon on this one.

No, just the recruiting part. Kruger can coach, and is a genuinely great guy (met him a couple times). I am just unsure about the recruiting side of it. Once the kids get in the program, Lon will do his best to coach them up. But it is the getting them there part I worry about, given the minimal amount of positive news in the past month.

How was last week for you CJ?

Even the non positive side of you can admit we have 1 5 star and 2 4 stars committed...

Would you take 2 years of Jamuni again?

You can look through my recent posts about the week. It was a great week for Kruger and Co.! I hope the momentum can continue into early signing day (and past, of course :p)

Big difference in the two. Jamuni has more skills. Merritt is what I have always wanted Jamuni to be, more aggressive. I hope we will see that this season. Three years of playing soft is enough for me.

Victor is both, skilled and aggressive. I’ll also add tough. That’s why I like him so much.

It sounds like Merritt and OU are on the same page from an update I just read. Bob Pryzbylo has done a great job this cycle and likes where thing stands between OU and Corbin. I'm not sure if it's been brought up on the board yet but Merritt will be a RS freshman this year. He'll be a 3 for 3 guy if OU lands him. If the Daytona State College official site is accurate he played in 5 games last year for a total of 5 minutes. Take that for what it's worth but it should make you feel better about him averaging 3.4 points and 2.2 rebounds a game off a very small sample size.

I'll give you my very unprofessional scouting take from what I've watched on Corbin HS videos. First up, he seems like a very likable kid that the other players gravitate towards and would fit what Lon and staff want at OU. He looks to be every bit or more of 6'9" but rivals list him at 250 lbs. The Daytona State College website has him at 220 and to me that seems more accurate. A couple of interviews Corbin talks about getting stronger and from photos it looks like he's filled in since high school. He should continue to advance once he get's into the Griffin Center. Athletically, Corbin is pretty fluid and can finish above the rim with ease. He doesn't look like a clumsy big guy out there running around so he should translate to OU's uptempo system. Corbin's videos doesn't show a lot offensively other than lobs and dunks but a few clips shows him with a pretty good looking turnaround hook shot and the occasional 15 foot jumper. Defensively, he's got the tools to block shots and rebound but it's hard to gage that in the limited film I've seen.

Overall, I think Corbin is a sleeper type player but has some tools to help this team, especially athletically. Lon adds a big with a couple years removed from high school but still has 3 years of eligibility. Merritt helps balance a big class and fits the system as well as personality wise.

I know there has been talk about adding a juco (possibly Corbin) and a grad transfer to help balance the class. I'd typically be on that side of the fence but I don't see Lon turning down Malik Hall or Tyson Etinne if they want a spot. Obviously, Hall being a top 50 guy is to talented a prospect and a take all day if we are lucky enough to sign him. Where I may disagree with others is with Tyson Etinne. If Harmon is really a one and done, it puts you right back in a position to have to find another quality guard. I think Tyson is a very underrated shooter and is more than capable of sliding into Harmon's role if he bolts to the NBA. While I like Jamal Bieniemy, I think Tyson right now is the more complete guard and has the upside to be an All Big-12 type of player down the road. Just a thought, but I think you can sign 5 freshman in a class and not disrupt the balance of the team. Especially if 1 or 2 of them leave early which is the case with Harmon and Hall.
