2019 Recruiting

Who cares if the big dogs are starting to call. If they're good players, that should happen. This is OU. I'm looking forward to Lon and staff scoring some nice recruiting victories...

OU will, until they win a title or put players in the NBA by the handful, lose those battles to the big boys 99 out of 100 times.

Overstatement serves no purpose. I can, off the top of my head, name four Sooner players in the past 10 years that received offers from blue blood programs, and though I certainly don't keep a strict count, I don't think we offered 396--an average of 39 a year--other such players, which we would have had to do for your statement to be true.

Who?

Blake and Young don't really count, given where they grew up. That is the ONE advantage OU has, obviously, is when I kid from the area is that good.

Who else? I think KU got in on Buddy late. I guess Harmon probably has a Blue Blood offer, though I haven't checked.

McGusty had some big time programs after him (Indiana & Louisville). Other than him, Harmon, & kinda Buddy OU does its best work with hidden gems & guys who work their tails off.

He didn't pan out all that well for OU but Jelon Hornbeak had a lot of solid offers per rivals including from Arizona.

I always love this argument -- that TY and Blake "don't count" because they are local. Clearly they wouldn't have gone to OU just because it was local if they didn't think OU would prepare them for the next level and/or allow them to compete for titles. I bet if you look at every Top 50 recruit in a given year, you'd find that very few of them choose their local school, so to discount those two guys is silly.

And KU definitely wanted Buddy. It isn't like they just paid lip service to him.

Bottom line -- we have two national POY winners in the last decade, plus a guy who finished runner-up last season. So it is crazy to act like we don't get great players. We will likely never match schools like UK, Duke, UNC, KU, but to suggest we basically have no chance of ever landing a guy with offers from those places is flat wrong.

Plenty of guys have left the state to attend top hoops schools elsewhere. Mr. Sunshine didn't specify that he was talking about out-of-state players, so why should I have to play by different rules than he did?

I don't care if Self did get in on Buddy late (I'm taking your word for that) -- to hear cjh tell it, all it takes is one offer from a top school and boom--we're out of the running. And yes, according to 247, Harmon does have a blueblood offer -- from Duke.

Should this be a concern? It seems like there's been a ton of offers, as opposed to offering a few, focusing in on those and recruiting them hard. I have no idea what's going on in OU basketball recruiting right now, but it kind of feels like some desperation may be setting in. I hope i'm wrong. Does OU have a solid lead on anyone besides Devion Harmon?

Be careful, you get ripped for having that opinion (that Kruger is struggling to recruit).

There is no reason for concern. Look on Verbal Commits for the number of offers. We have two more open offers than Kansas does. Not sure they are worried. As the saying goes, "don't put all your eggs in one basket".

Also, someone should confirm this, but I believe the coaches can offer, but it doesn't necessarily mean that guy could commit right then and there if the staff is waiting for a couple other guys that they are really wanting. So last year for example, we offered other point guards, but we weren't going to let any PGs commit until we knew what Trae was going to do. Wouldn't let a 3 star guy take the place of a 5 star.

Maybe they’re taking their cue from the LSU coaches. Anything to make cjh happy is fine with me. ;)

Seriously, it’s not unusual for schools to hand out more offers as they get closer to signing day. That doesn’t mean they’re not still interested in the key recruits they targeted early on, it just improves their chances of filling the open spots with the best player available.

Players being recruited later are sometimes just as good or better than those being targeted early in the recruiting process. Late bloomers and hidden gems are often the result of adding new players to our recruiting list.

Glad you are coming around to my side :) Haha! I want OU to succeed. I just feel that, after the Final Four run, there should have been more done to capitalize on it. I am hopeful that OU will get the players they need to be competitive in the Big 12 going forward, regardless of the coach. Casting a wide net can help to reduce the risk of having to go with plan C or D options in January or February.

Your self-inflicted pity party is getting old.

When nearly every post you make is like a broken record, you leave the door open for criticism. Your latest campaign expressing concern about a gap between commitments more than three months before the early signing period is a prime example of what I’m talking about.

With one top 100 player already signed and a top 30 PG a virtual lock, I’m pleased with our 2019 class so far. I’m also confident the other spots will be filled with quality players. If we’re still in this position with no additional commitments in October, let me know so I can worry with you.

Oh, by the way, I’m not interested in joining your pity party.

As you know, I have had plenty to say about the quality of the recruits since our final four run. I haven’t changed my mind about that. I’m simply in a holding pattern, waiting to see what our 2019 class will look like. Harmon and Reaves are a good start. With four more spots to fill and a host of high profile recruits with OU offers, I see no reason to fill those spots with leftovers.
