Emig/Tulsa World article on Evans' interview with OU

I gotta say, reading Evans' quotes gets me a little bit pumped. Just talk tho

I like Terry's enthusiasm. But his "unlimited recruiting budget" quote bothers me. No school has an unlimited recruiting budget. I hope he was misquoted.

"We would win, first of all," he told the World two weeks ago. "I've won everwhere I've been. I would bring an identity, same as I've had at all of my programs – an up-tempo, high-scoring team that also plays great defense and rebounds the basketball.

"I haven't really seen an identity regarding OU basketball since coach (Kelvin) Sampson left. Oklahoma needs an identity, needs some excitement. ...

You're right, of course. OU's recruiting budget is not "unlimited." But it's about as close as you can get in today's economy.

When you go from a budget of $0 to $300K +, that probably seems like unlimited. Unlimited, meaning the $'s are there for him to do what he needs to do. Don't take it so literal.

What I was going to say. When your budget instantly becomes about 100x what you had, you are going to think it's awesome. Not worried about him spending what Capel did though cause he will focus on the area, not freaking east coast dreams

Well, considering we spent over 350K on recruiting budget last year, 5th most in college basketball, that would probably be considered "unlimited" when you have no recruiting budget as is the case with Evans now at UCO.

Agreed. That's like giving a kid with a loaner bicycle a nice car to drive.

Terry's remark about an unlimited budget doesn't bother me one bit.

I found it interesting that he mentioned Sampson several times but not Tubbs. I always thought Sampson hired Evans solely for recruiting purposes (primarily to get Sheldon Williams), but Evans seems to at least have some respect for what Kelvin did.

Evans is the Warren Buffett hire.

This is big business and there are 3 ingredients to profit.

1. Program Tradition
2. Players
3. Coaching

In that order. Program tradition will determine what players you are consistently able to acquire. Program tradition will determine your facilities and attendance and determine how much you should pay a coach.

Ben Howland makes $2mil per year. OU should not be paying a coach the same as UCLA. Jamie Dixon is making $1.3mil a year. He is proven. That's what OU should be paying a coach AFTER he is proven.

OU is going to be one of the 4 best programs in the Big XII with any number of coaches. I would much rather give Terry Evans his "dream job" at $750k than overpay for some mid major coach who lucked into Jamie Skeen like Shaka Smart did.

Not to mention that UCO only wants him to bring in Oklahoma kids.

According to Chewy, who has the goods on basketball info, nobody as of yesterday has interviewed. But this article states Evans interviewed last week.

So, which is it?

Two independent sources stating Evans interviewed. I believe it.

This is correct, and his contacts/pipelines are all local. No more flying to the East Coast at every opportunity to recruit dudes who couldn't find Oklahoma on a map.
