OU vs Xavier 7pm on FS1

Not reading through the game thread. I assume it is a lot of people overreacting to our third game of the season.

I bit my tongue a bit in the last few days because people were so optimistic about this game. I didn't want to bring the negativity in, I just didn't feel like we really knew who this team was after two games (and still don't after three).

This year is going to have more ups and downs than normal. Lets just enjoy we have basketball and hope we make the dance and improve as the season sgoes on

this is about correct ...

I think Xavier is really similar to TCU in terms of talent level. Well-coached and won't beat themselves. If we defend like we're capable, then we'll win. Our offense is better by a good margin.

What was this opinion based on? Do you still believe that? Was our defense just so atrocious we made them look much better than they are?

Hopefully just a 1 game anomaly, but you know what they say about hope.

This opinion was based on advanced statistics and ratings. After the game against Xavier, our offensive rating actually went up and is #9 in the nation per Ken Pom. We are extremely efficient, don't turn it over, get to the free throw line with regularity, and assist on a high % of our baskets through three games. We will score well against everyone.

If you remove the final score and look at our stats, the only offensive stat you might side eye is the 3 point % but some of that came from jacking threes after we got down.

----

Xavier had a once a season/once every five years shooting night. They hit every open shot and almost every contested shot. If they hit a HIGH number of threes ... even 50% (15-30), that's an 87-77 game. If they hit an above average level 12-30, that's an 78-77 game.

If they hit their average, we win by a couple.

They hit an ALL TIME level of threes, with an effective field goal percentage of 73%. Can't judge them or us based on that game.

Having said that, they are much better offensively than I expected. Freemantle is a Brady Manek clone...and those guys can definitely shoot it, and their ball movement is crisp.

Its our third game and they 6? I'd hold off a bit on any stats analysis

There are some who even if OU gave up an average of 20 threes a game over a season they would act like.. nothing to see here! OU's perimeter defense is fine! I went and looked at Xavier's schedule and even though they are undefeated they barely beat some average teams at home. Really doesn't make OU's loss look good at all. That being said, I do think they had a once in a whatever 3 point shooting expedition. I looked at the stats in some of those games and they hit like 5-20 in one... 7 in another. What this tells me is they don't usually shoot it that well, obviously. Which you could say makes it look even worse for OU. If a team has a career game like that, it's usually not because the other team is playing awesome perimeter defense.... But conversely I don't think that team could make that percentage again shooting with dummies in front of them. It would be interesting to play them again in Norman. I know it won't happen, but it would be interesting. It was a pretty disappointing game, but not one to totally panic over, yet. Let's get a larger sample of perimeter defense.... But I do have a feeling this area is going to be a struggle.... we'll see.

The question to be asked is "a contested 3 point shot the same or different than an uncontested 3." We rarely contested their perimeter shots thus we have to ask if the same was done by other Xavier opponents so we can make a fair comparison with other results encountered by their team.

Beating TCU on the road is way more impactful to OU's season than losing to Xavier, IMO.

In other words, this week produced more good news than bad.

Also, don't discount that Xavier has played 7 games already. That's a big deal.

Agree on both fronts. Plus it’s so dangerous to draw conclusions from one game, no matter how good or bad. Last night doesn’t mean Xavier is a top ten team going forward, nor does it mean we’re going to give up 100 to every good offense we play. And winning at TCU doesn’t mean we are suddenly going to be road warriors in the conference.

Got manhandled. Feels like what Stanford did to us last year. Hopefully Xavier is a top 10 team.

But judging by their 1 point win vs Bradley, 3 point win vs EKU, and 3 point win vs Toledo...probably not.

Don’t know which we beat but I believe we will beat several of them picked ahead of us. We have plenty of offense and the D will get better.

Don’t let this game bug you. We beat Nova by 23 early in the 2015-16 season and we saw what happened later. I realize it is apples-to-oranges but we will be much better than the team we saw tonight.

I know, x had that feeling and when ya have that it's amazing...the rim looks HUGE.

I'm not super impressed with our close out perimeter D...it's been suspect for awhile.

Although Reaves and Manek, Harmon can light it up..IF 1 of those struggle...God forbid 2 we don't have a lot of offensive firepower behind them.

I don't get (not directed to you) the love for Vic...yes, he's "athletic" but that doesn't make a basketball player....so much more. Again, just trying to see where the offense besides our 3.

I know we are better than what happened with X ....they couldn't miss...but I don't see us much better than 5th at best...we'll see

Agree with most of that. I am definitely concerned about D but not going to fret over one game. If it keeps happening it will be bad. You can’t constantly get beat off the dribble and have poor close outs against good teams.

Offense will be OK for the most part. Where it will struggle is when teams have a guy who can shut down Reaves because he is the creator for the offense. I miss Doo because he could create mismatch problems that we need. Manek being able to post on some smaller guys will help at times.

Agree that we have several guys who are not going to burn the nets but we have always had those guys. They need to get better on D and contribute on O when they have the easy shots. I think they are off to a decent start.

We have the ability to beat good teams and repeat my prediction that we will do that several times. I think the X loss will turn out to be a good thing for us. But, like you, I think we will have cold nights and where we tend to force shots. We could also lose a few to inferior opponents if that happens.

But I think this team is dangerous and is much more fun to watch than many of our teams during Lon’s tenure.

I can see that...if our 3 are on...yes we can. As long as the other do their roles well. We'll see. Hopefully will have most of the games.

D was not great but most college players won't shoot that percentage from 3 if theres no D at all. You make 19 3's you will beat just about anybody
