Blake ESPN article on the Capel firing...

DAMMIT!

This just confirms what I suspected about Blake for some time...that he's a good-hearted, loyal kid.

I'm not inclined to get too riled up about it, but a little loyalty to his university, too, would be appreciated. He can express his disappointment with the decision and endorse Capel's fine qualities without making the school look bad. We've got recruiting to do (and a coach to hire, for that matter).

Well, most of us here do care! Blake is wrong in this case. But he's a great Sooner and he has a right to his opinion. Unlike the majority of people on this board, he earned it.

I didn't mean it as a slap to Blake. Just like everyone else on this board, I think Blake is a beast. I know I'm a nobody and I'm the first to admit that, but we've all "earned' the right to have an opinion. Is he more loyal to Capel than OU?

Everyone expects a former player to get his coach's back.

It happens all the time.

No big deal if some of you guys don't care about the opinion of one of the greatest Sooners ever - I doubt Blake gives a damn about the opinion of us annonymous posters on a basketball message board, either.

I think it was time for Capel to go, but I won't devalue Blake or his opinion just because he had different view.

Blake cares deeply about his University as his pocket book will reflect but he is extremely close to Coach Capel, he is like an older brother to him. Which could be why Capel didn't succeed at a higher profile school but thats for another discussion. Point is Blake will cool down and back the University, Joe C. and whoever he hires!

Let's hope so.:bgriff624_jpg_xs:

No big deal, your remark just hit me wrong and I reacted. My bad.

I can't argue your point about Blake's loyalty to the university. I'm a little disappointed that he chose to address only one side of a sensitive issue, without trying to understand everything that went into the decision to let Capel go. Guess that is to be expected of a young man who is operating on emotions right now.

As I said before, I think Blake made a mistake by voicing his opinion through a national news source. But I do care what he thinks and that he is upset with the news about his former coach. I'm sensitive that way, too.

Hopefully, he will cool down in time and realize that he could have handled it better. Nothing he says or does at this point is going to bring Capel back. But a lot of what he says and does can hurt the university moving forward, and that's where I have a problem with what he did.

"Your country ain't your blood, you remember that."

Loyalty to someone with whom he shared a mutual trust, who spent everyday with him demanding blood, sweat and tears to get him to the promised land. This supersedes any ties binding to the university, of which he was one student in thousands. The fans and president of OU didn't go through the same experience Blake, Capel and the rest of the team did. Loyalty in defense of a friend should mean more than a university's search for a coach, which is transient.

Loyalty is something Jeff Capel exhibited to OU when he had several other excellent opportunities (Arizona, UVA, etc). Loyalty is something that OU did not exhibit in regards to Jeff Capel, but that is the nature of the beast.

yeah it's a good thing that Capel didn't use those opportunities for his own advantage.

Oh, I think OU exhibited plenty of loyalty in awarding him a huge salary increase. And I trust that raise had not a little bit to do with Capel's loyalty to OU.

In any case, if he's smart with money, his family is now in a more secure position than most of us will ever be, even while he remains unemployed.

And it's not as though he was offered those positions outright. There was rumored interest from those schools, yes, but there are always such rumors -- which is not to say they aren't sometimes true -- when a coach is riding high.

Jeff will be fine, no doubt. He will probably get a gig as an assistant in the NBA or something of the like.

OU offered that raise when he was a hot commodity because someone else would have ponied it up, and he may have had to take that. If I am not mistaken UVA did offer him a deal for $1 million+. That was us securing a coach who had been extremely successful in a short period of time..a good business decision at the time, not loyalty, IMO.
