Playing OSU & OU Hoops Games Irresponsible
2/2/2011 11:06:00 AM
Someone in the Big 12 Conference office needs to step in ASAP and assume the responsibility to do what officials at Oklahoma State and Missouri obviously refuse to do – postpone tonight’s basketball game in Stillwater between the Tigers and Cowboys.
The decision to play it is mind-boggling. Even more ludicrous is bowing to the demands of TV once again and keeping the tip off at 8 p.m.
That late start means those fans who are brave (or stupid) enough to decide to attempt attending the game at Gallagher-Iba Arena will attempt to make the return trip home well after 10 p.m. Postponing the game would take the decision out of the fans' hands.
State and local officials are already taxed to the max trying to reach motorists and emergency vehicles that are stuck in snow banks and ditches. They don’t need the additional work that’s almost certain to occur if people from Tulsa, Oklahoma City and elsewhere try to drive to the contest.
You would think last week’s remembrance of the 10 people associated with the OSU basketball program who died in a plane crash 10 years ago would have served as a strong reminder to everyone of what horrible things can happen in bad weather conditions.
The Missouri team has been holed up in a Kansas City, Mo., hotel the past two days waiting to catch a flight to Oklahoma City. Reports late Wednesday morning indicated the Tigers were trying to travel to the Kansas City Airport (KCI) in time to make their flight to OKC.
"The Suits" who make the TV decisions can undoubtedly find another game to telecast tonight. When the Oklahoma-Baylor game was postponed until Wednesday afternoon, the slot was filled last night by Ole Miss' upset of Kentucky.
Moving the OU-Baylor game back only a few hours is also highly questionable. At least it will still be daylight when its finished, but why even entice people to leave their homes, which is something emergency personnel are still pleading with them to do.
Both Bedlam schools have even offered free tickets to the games in an attempt to boost attendance.
A whole lot of people at OSU, Mizzou, OU, Baylor and the Big 12 office need to remember these words: It’s only a game!
