I think the first few minutes will tell us a lot. Obviously it would be great to shoot well early, but mainly, I want to see us get through the opening segment without any turnovers or silly fouls. Early turnovers were a major issue against UNC and TCU. Not quite as bad against KU, but we still didn't come out strong. Two or three sloppy, live ball turnovers can really snowball on the road. We have plenty of experienced guys, so let's show that and play with poise. And if the game is tight in the second half, we need to be smart offensively. During the segment in Lawrence when things got away from us, we had a stretch of four possessions where three of our shots came from Moore and Soares, and two of them were from 3-pt. range. That's not a winning formula. Los and JM need to look for their offense, and hopefully JM continues his upward trend of getting to the line. I also want to see Moser play the three starting guards heavy minutes. Don't be so quick to go to Dart and Waldo unless fouls are an issue. All three of those guys are in good enough shape to play 35+ mins. Bench players are much less likely to play well on the road. Ride your horses if they are playing well.
Well, so much for that. Three fouls, two of which were silly. Only one official turnover, but blocks basically have the same effect. Add in two missed layups and it’s another road game where we come out playing like a team of inexperienced freshmen. Perhaps we can figure out that having our two post players try to score over their length and size isn’t a good option.
I’d love to see some of the pace we always hear about.
